THE COMPOSITION OF FOOD AND ITS IMPACT ON THE GUT MICROBIOME AND HEALTH
Over the last few years, scientific research has shown that the gut microbiome or flora – the microorganisms in our digestive tract – can have an important effect on our health. Adapting eating habits and the composition of our food look like an obvious way of influencing our health, both directly and indirectly via the gut biome. We are trying to stimulate health-promoting bacteria via specific food fibres, and the presence of bioactive plant components appear to have very specific effects on certain bacteria and our health. Although there are many possible ways of adapting our food to the needs of the microbiome, various aspects need special attention. For example, the stability of the food product or supplement is very important. And the wide variation in the composition of the gut microbiome in different individuals also has to be taken into account. Some people already foresee a future for the development of personalised food.
